Village Administrative Officer (VAO)
The Village Administrative Officer (VAO) is the best-known post under TNPSC Group 4, and the one most applicants have in mind when they sit the exam.
What a VAO does
A VAO is a field-level revenue official. The role involves maintaining village land records, supporting revenue administration, and acting as a point of contact between the village and the government. It is one of the most visible entry-level posts in the Tamil Nadu government.
How it is filled
VAO posts are filled through the same CCSE-IV written exam as the other Group 4 posts. Because the education bar is only a 10th-standard pass, competition is heavy. Selection is by merit in the written exam; there is no interview.
Eligibility
The standard Group 4 eligibility applies: an SSLC pass, the 18–32 age limit with category relaxations, and mandatory knowledge of Tamil.
