What is the TNPSC Group 4 exam?
TNPSC Group 4 — officially the Combined Civil Services Examination-IV (CCSE-IV) — is a state-level recruitment test run by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. It fills entry-level posts across Tamil Nadu government departments.
The best-known post under Group 4 is the Village Administrative Officer (VAO). Other common posts include Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Typist and Steno-Typist. Because the education bar is only a 10th-standard pass, the exam draws a very large number of applicants each cycle.
It is a single-stage written test — there is no interview for most posts. Candidates who clear the written exam and, where required, a skill test, get selected on merit.
Exam pattern
The Group 4 exam is a single, offline, OMR-based objective test. It is split into two parts, both held on the same day.
| Part | Subject | Approx. questions | Eligibility base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part A | Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (Tamil only) | ~100 | SSLC (10th) |
| Part B | General Studies (6 units, Tamil & English) + Aptitude & Mental Ability | ~75 | SSLC (10th) |
Syllabus
Part A — Tamil (eligibility-cum-scoring)
This part tests Tamil language ability. It covers Tamil grammar and Tamil literature and authors. It is both a scoring test and a language-eligibility gate, so a basic command of Tamil is essential.
Part B — General Studies and Aptitude
This is the wider paper. It pulls from six general-studies units plus aptitude:
- General science
- Current affairs
- Indian and Tamil Nadu geography
- History, polity and economy
- Indian national movement
- Tamil Nadu's socio-political history and development administration
- Quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning
In short: a mix of school-level general knowledge, Tamil Nadu context, and basic reasoning. No advanced maths or specialised law knowledge is needed.
Eligibility
Educational qualification
The basic requirement is a pass in SSLC (10th standard) or an equivalent qualification. Typing and shorthand posts additionally require a government technical certificate in the relevant skill (for example, a typewriting certificate for a Typist post).
Age limit
The age limit is 18 to 32 years for most posts, and 21 to 32 years for certain watcher and forest posts. Category-wise relaxations apply as per Tamil Nadu government rules, so SC/ST/OBC and other reserved candidates get extra upper-age relaxation.
Language
Knowledge of Tamil is mandatory. Part A itself tests Tamil, so anyone without working Tamil will struggle to qualify.
Posts and salary
Group 4 recruits for a set of clerical and field-level posts. The exact vacancies vary with every notification, but the recurring ones are:
- Village Administrative Officer (VAO) — the flagship Group 4 post
- Junior Assistant
- Bill Collector
- Typist and Steno-Typist
- Store Keeper and similar department posts
Pay is set according to the Tamil Nadu government pay matrix. Group 4 posts fall in the lower entry levels of the matrix. Exact starting pay and allowances are listed in the official notification, so check there rather than relying on second-hand figures.
How to apply
Applications are submitted online only, through the official TNPSC portal. The general steps are:
- Go to tnpsc.gov.in and find the latest Group 4 / CCSE-IV notification.
- Register (one-time profile) with your name, email and mobile number.
- Fill the online application form and choose your post preference.
- Upload the required documents — photo, signature and certificates.
- Pay the application fee online.
- Save the confirmation and take a printout for reference.
How to prepare
Because the exam is 10th-standard-based, most of the general-studies paper is school-level knowledge plus Tamil Nadu current affairs. A sensible prep plan:
- Nail Tamil first. Part A is a scoring, elimination-style section. Brush up grammar and read a standard Tamil literature guide.
- Cover the six GS units. Use a TNPSC-specific general-studies book rather than a UPSC one — the scope is narrower and state-focused.
- Track Tamil Nadu current affairs for the last 6–12 months, especially state schemes and budget.
- Practise aptitude — percentages, ratios, averages, simple interest, series and basic logic.
- Solve previous-year papers. This is the fastest way to learn the question style and the weight of each unit.
There is no shortcut to the volume of applicants, but a focused two-to-four-month plan is enough for most serious candidates.
